Nakuru Kenya

 

Nakuru is the provincial capital of Kenya's Rift Valley province and is the fourth largest City in Kenya.

The town was established by the British during the colonial era as an administrative town for the British settlers who had big farms around the area, and is known for its flamingos and once dubbed "the cleanest town in East-Africa

Economy

The main economic activities in Nakuru are based on Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. With the vast agricultural potential of the surrounding areas, the town has many agricultural enterprises.
The main Crops produced in Nakuru and surrounding areas are coffee, wheat, barley, maize, and beans.

There are also large Dairy farms serving the many milk processing plants in Nakuru.

Education

Nakuru is a main educational center in Kenya. It has many Universities and training institutes that serve all people of Kenya.
Egerton University is a large public university located in Nakuru as well as the private Kabarak University.

Other training institutes in Nakuru are the Rift Valley Institute of Technology, the Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI) and the Kenya Insitute of Management.

Tourism

Tourism is a key income generating activity in Nakuru. Many people visit Lake Nakuru to watch its flamingoes.

Visit Nakuru National park and discover a great variety of wildlife. If you love Mountain climbing, you can visit the Menengai Crater, a dormant volcano with a beautiful view to take pictures.

Mount Longonot is the highest mountain of the Rift Valley is also a exciting and challenging place to visit.

People

Nakuru people come from all parts of Kenya. The town is predominantly African but there is also a big population of Kenyans of Indian origin and some white settler families.

The biggest attraction in Nakuru is Lake Nakuru which is home to thousands of beautiful Flamingos.

The Lake Nakuru National Park is great for game viewing. It is home to the rare black and white rhino, Giraffes, Monkeys and many other animals. There is also an amazing 400 species of birds here.
You will discover the carnivorous black storks, hovering around the lake, hunting the young and sick flamingos.

Other places to view pink flamingos in Nakuru are on Lake Bogoria National Park and Lake Naivasha.

If you are interested in Historical sites, go visit the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site, which is a major Neolithic and Iron Age site.
In the near by Nyahururu town, you can visit the great Thomson's Falls, the 236 Feet (72m) high waterfall on the Ewaso Narok river.
Visitors come to Lake Nakuru national park to see the animals. Hyenas, monkeys, rhinoceroses, baboons, impalas and zebras, just to name a few.
